Volunteer Opportunities at Birmingham VAMC

Information Desk Receptionists Volunteers will greet patients and visitors, offer directional assistance, and have the capability to look up the location of room numbers of inpatients.
Adminstrative Clerical Support These volunteers provide needed clerical support to various services throughout the medical center. Duties include, telephone answering, light typing, filing, running office machines, etc.
Patient Advocate Assistants These volunteers will work closely with the Patient Advocates, assisting with survey data collection and data entry.
Patient Services Assistant Volunteers will assist nursing staff by filling water pitchers, helping to make beds, running errands, etc. Volunteers who help in this area allow nursing staff to spend more time on actual patient care.
Patient Escorts Assist the nursing staff by pushing wheelchairs and/or escorting one-to-one, patients to their clinic appointments, canteen, or outside on a pretty day.
The Lovin' Spoonfuls These volunteers receive special training to assist in improving the meal time experience for our inpatients. Volunteers sit and chat, assist setting out meal trays, opening containers, or actually feeding some veterans. Training is provided on how to deal with a choking victim.
